ABOUT

Old Aiken Post Office

The Old Aiken Post Office is truly an area landmark. It has been memorialized with plaques, paintings, postcards and a variety of other items sold in and around Aiken. It is often used by locals to give directions in the area. The half acre lot on which the building sits is bordered on one side by Southern Bell’s main area switching office which makes the Old Post office very convenient for Internet or other high tech communications.

When you walk up the front steps and into the building you enter a glorious rotunda, trimmed beautifully with wood and polished marble. As your footsteps echo from the twenty foot doomed ceiling, you see a large archway to the left that leads into the building’s main section; and to the right, the word “postmaster” is carved in the Roman style above the wooden door. The Postmaster’s office include two large rooms with 16 foot ceilings, large arched windows, and a private restroom. The main section of the building contains a large central area with 20 foot ceilings, a large conference room with a partial 2nd floor, two additional office, a half dozen work stations and two more restrooms. There is also a back area with the old main vault, another restroom, and a large chimney shaft that could be used for kitchen ventilation.

The lower floor is unfinished. It is divided with a lower rotunda that can be used as a conference room. It is divided into three offices and a break room on one side of the building. There is a large central area and back room used for storage, a corridor used as a copy room, and a large marble lined restroom. There are four entrances, two on the main floor and two on the lower floor, one of which is a small loading dock which opens to the apex of the large wraparound driveway that runs between Laurens Street and Park Avenue. The construction is primarily brick and granite, with gigantic hardwood beams supporting the roof.
